Recent action by the FDA in 2019 has taken to banning many chemical ingredients found in SPF products, evidence linking these ingredients to harmful effects on the body. Is it not time to consider natural, safer alternatives?
The Daily Mail has published an article on the FDA Proposing New Regulations to Sunscreens.
The latest health warnings says “ sun burn warnings have become so extreme that most of us are starved of vitamin D”.by using sun creams (spf's) which blocks Vitamin D being produced in the skin, according to experts including cancer specialists this is our most important of vitamins and using a sun screen (spf) stops us absorbing it, while at the same time the chemicals in sun screen actually increases the damaged from UVA the main cause of premature ageing and skin cancer .

Contributes to skin ageing and the development of skin cancer as it penetrates deeper into the skin where new cells are forming. It has a consistent intensity throughout the day and is even worse in winter, it can penetrate through cloud, glass, water and clothing even hats and umbrella shades .
Is more like a heat ray and can lead to surface sunburn its very unusual to get skin cancer from B light unless you keep getting burnt time after time. You have to be in direct sunlight for a prolonged period.. it cannot go through anything so behind glass or wearing clothing a hat or being in shade it is completely non damaging. It does however make your skin product vitamin D, also gives you the tan look and the build up of a tan does stop you getting burnt
A recent comment made by a USA medical centre has highlighted the following “and this is how when wearing a sunscreen shows that the ingredients in commercial sunscreens actually increase the risk of skin cancer and induce premature ageing”. Sunscreens are expected to offer significant protection from UV-induced skin damage and oxidative stress, however simple tests are detecting ‘free radicals’ in sunscreens exposed to UVA, so is the very thing that is designed to protect us in fact causing us more harm than good ?

Free Radicals trigger peroxidation, which leads to oxidative damage, which in turn leads to cell breakdown, resulting in skin ageing, cell decay and cancer growth.

So where can you find Antioxidants?
In Vital Oils, not petroleum oils, just pure unadulterated vital oils, packed with antioxidants. Scientifically, Peach Oil, Grapeseed Oil & Avocado are considered to have ‘powerful antioxidants’ and Jojoba (a wet oil) is very moisturising’. The theory of directly applying an unadulterated form of antioxidants, which can be absorbed by the skin and will restore antioxidant enzymes, was raised in a paper by the Journal of Investigative dermatology in 2003. So, it would seem that, simply put, by applying the oils topically (eg: onto the skin) they form a defence line and work from within to fight against free radical damage.

Keeping safe in the sun
From personal experience, we’ve found that the key is to make sure that you don’t let the skin burn in the first few days, so for the first 2-3 days of your holiday or in the early part of spring apply one of our oils regularly all over your body (not just your exposed skin as UVA rays can penetrate through clothing, shade and water) and only stay in the sun for short spells, no more than 15-20 minutes at a time.
If you’re in the sea or the pool, apply the oil after you’ve washed off the chlorine from the pool or the salt from the sea. Skin will tell you when it’s had enough with a slight tingle to the skin, or redness then know it’s time to head for the shade or to cover up.
We’ve found that it’s vital to stick to this routine, if you don’t do this and you start to burn, your skin won’t recover so you won’t be able to achieve that lovely golden glow.
Once you’re past the first 2-3 days you will find that the skin starts to take on a healthy glow which you can then build on with an oil containing antioxidants.
